Daily Facial Hair: Friday Friedrich Engels

30 Jul

From Wikipedia: Friedrich Engels was a German social scientist, author, political theorist, philosopher, and father of communist theory, alongside Karl Marx. Together they produced The Communist Manifesto in 1848. Engels also edited the second and third volumes of Das Kapital after Marx’s death.

Now that is a statue!

Daily Facial Hair: Thursday Toot

29 Jul

This image is from the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championship winners for the Sideburn/ Partial Beard category. 1st to 3rd (left to right) is Toot Joslin, Bruno Panza, Bill Mitchell. All have great ‘burns but Toot has reigned this category for years. I’m surprised Eric Brown didn’t get a place here…

Anyways, more Toot!

Daily Facial Hair: Wednesday Wild West

28 Jul

Sam Elliott is most notable for his giant moustache, his deep voice, and his ability to portray cowboys of the wild west like no other. Many know him as “The Stranger” from The Big Lebowski but he has played numerous badass cowboys in wild west flicks.

Daily Facial Hair: Tuesday Tolstoy

27 Jul

The image above is the only color photograph of the novelist, shot at his Yasnaya Polyana estate in 1908 by Prokudin-Gorskii, a pioneer of color photography. Leo Tolstoy is the author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

Daily Facial Hair: Monday Mythbusters

26 Jul

Jamie Hyneman from Discovery Channel’s has always rocked a substantial moustache. He’s even become part of the interwebz with his own demotivational poster:

His partner in crime, Adam Savage, has more tame facial hair:

(not that there’s anything wrong with that…)

Daily Facial Hair: Sunday Spock, the evil one

25 Jul

In various media forms, when a goatee is on one of two twins, that is the evil one. Perhaps it started in Spock and Evil Spock in the Star Trek episode “Mirror, Mirror”.

Perhaps it comes from the Goat of Mendes:

Bender’s evil twin Flexo:

Cartman’s evil twin:

In Codename: Kids Next Door, Numbuh 4 has an alternate “Negative Numbuh 4” with a fake goatee because it “makes him look more eviler” (exactly what kids need, bad grammar in their cartoons):

Edit: Flexo is not bender’s evil twin, he is his good twin, as is with Cartman. Goateed Cartman is the good Cartman, and the rest of the South Park crew’s goateed twins are evil.

Daily Facial Hair: Saturday Soul Patch

24 Jul

At a Buckingham Palace party, Stephen Judge was made fun of by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh for having a “poor frustrated beard”. Stephen Judge said “Prince Philip is patron of the Chartered Society of Designers and I had been invited to the party in July due to my involvement with them. On hearing that I was a designer he laughed, saying ‘Well, you are obviously not a hirsute designer,’ and pointed at my small but perfectly formed soul patch.”

I have to agree with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’s comment on seeing one was to describe it as a “poor frustrated beard” and advised its wearer “If you are going to grow a beard, grow a beard.”
See some articles here and here)

Stephen Judge has a good sense of humor and has started growing a full beard for charity (justgiving.com/ifyouaregoingtogrowabeard). The picture below is from his charity site:

Prince Philip not only has a good point but has some credentials. He sported a full beard when in the Navy in WWII:

Daily Facial Hair: Friday Franz Joseph I

23 Jul

Franz Joseph I (sometimes spelled “Josef”) was the emperor of Austria from December 1848 to November 1916. He was the great grandfather of Franz Ferdinand who was his successor to the throne. Most people know the name Franz Ferdinand due to the Scottish pop band. During his impressive 68 year reign he sported one hell of a beard.

There’s some great information here on his strong work ethic and peacefulness.
