Another good thing to keep in mind is similar named items. If you see an ingredient that starts with stearylate, or stearol, it is most likely stearic acid or a derivative of it. As a vegan and a person who hates the idea of indestructible Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other TSEs and the rise of Alzheimer’s diagnoses (thanks to the USDA, FDA, and CDC burying heads in the sand), I’ve learned to avoid particular prefixes to ingredients like stear- and lact- and avoid altogether anything that says enzymes, mono and/or diglycerides, DATEM, and my newest endeavor: natural flavor (unless it’s certified vegan, no more “accidentally vegan” foods with natural flavor).

If you are ever unsure of an ingredient most companies welcome phone calls and emails regarding their product. Sometimes you find out things like I did: anything that says natural flavor on ANYTHING from Frito-Lay has ground pork in it. No more of those MSG laden Frito BBQ twists for me, haha.

To any vegans or anyone remotely concerned with what they eat: check absolutely every label from your foods. Vitamin water has calcium lactate, salt and vinegar chips has whey or calcium lactate, Frito Lay has natural flavor (ground pork), there’s so many unexpected foods that contain animals.

Adrenaline – hormone from adrenal gland of livestock
